about

The Shrews Halifax, Nova Scotia

I thought of the name The Shrews after a screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The first song I wrote was Prince Hal 9000, a reference to the film and King Henry IV Part One.
Every couple years, I make a song that entirely captures how I feel about everything, so I make a few more for few more for fun and sadness and call it an album.

Track Name: September
So dig, dig your own hole and call that hole your home. And build, build your own cage with bars made of sadness and rage.

It’s the first day of September; school is bearing down. Soon the leaves will all be fallen and the grass is already turning brown.

And there’s nothing that can stop it, maybe a nearby exploding star but we won’t know of it for decades; light’s far too slow and the distance much too far.
Track Name: Plans
I've been walking the planet
I've been walking the Earth
My poor mother's been locked upstairs and
she's been giving birth

To my brothers and my sisters
who walk their separate ways
one goes North and one goes South and
One goes East one West

I've been talking to the locksmith
Who's doing the best he can
but there's only so much that he can do
that fits in with the plan

That's all part of the plan

I've been thinking about the self a lot
And all that's come to bare
Everything that's come to light and
All the things I fear

I've been drawing Antarctica,
I've coloured all the dots.
I have put the military in all the
Strategic spots

And up there on the white board too,
I've drawn everything that I'm to do
But up there on the white board there
is not a single mention of you

You're not part of the plan.

I was sitting by the Delaware
With my buddy Johann Rall
When a bunch of yankees showed up on boats and
Shot him with a musket ball

I cried out in terror
"Where are my brothers now?"
They were all on Washington's boats
And they were screaming how

I'd become a traitor to the
Cause they all believed
My brain couldn't process what my
Eyes could plainly see

Was that part of the plan?

So I made peace with my brothers
and I let them have their war
Told 'em not to call on me cause
I'd be way off far

I went and saw the locksmith
who said he'd love to help
but he'd locked up both of his own hands
and he couldn't free himself

So I went home and cleaned the white board and
while washing off my hands
I thought to myself "Life would be better
If I didn't have any plans"

I haven't got any plans.
Track Name: The Sinking of the Rue Mian
The sinking of the Rue Mian came at half past four. Everyone had gathered there, by your front door. They watched on giant television screens, hanging in the sky. Your sister swallowed a scream and couldn’t help but cry.

[Muffled voices]
Track Name: Bear Song
Give me one, Give me five, minus six, give me four
I'll try to be there like I wasn't before
And I'll hold you tightly, as tight as I can
I'll be a person who's better than I am

And I wanted you to love me
And I wanted you to love me
But you just didn't see (but I never put myself out there to see)
And I wanted you to love me

Give me one, Give me five, minus six, give me four
I'll try to be there like I wasn't before
And I'll hold you tightly, as tight as I can
Track Name: (Anyone Who's Ever Told Me What To Do) Lives in a Hole
I used to go through life not knowing wrong from right, I spent my evenings staring out into the night. Braincells putting up a fight, my lack of wings kept me from flight, people who would give me advise didn’t know where to begin. where to begin where to begin where to begin

I was looking all around, but they’d all been put underground. Even the red hand and his white-man friend can’t be found and it was destined and bound, either sooner or later or now I’d be at the mercy of the town and I didn’t know where to begin. where to begin where to begin where to begin

Anyone’s who’s ever told me what to do’s in a hole, anyone’s who’s ever told me what to do’s in a hole now. Anyone’s who’s ever told me what to do’s in a hole, anyone’s who’s ever told me what to do’s in a hole now.

I used to go through life not knowing wrong from right; I was looking all around they’d all been put underground. I missed the funerals while I was staying out of town; I didn’t know where to visit, where I could have found their bones.
